PRODUCTION COMPANY
Hastur Films Sdn. Bhd.

MALAYSIA

Logline:

The discovery of an ancient relic in the sea bed will violently change the fate of the group of archaeological researchers working on East Malaysia coast site. The mysterious forces of the relic will face them to Bakunawa, the God of the Sea.

Synopsis:
Mia, a young researcher working on an archaeological project with her university colleagues, finds an ancient relic while diving near an island off the coast of East Malaysia. Since then, she has been having nightmares of a presence calling her from Bakunawa of the ocean.  The mysterious force of the relic causes the expedition boat to capsize, resulting in one of them being killed by a sea creature during the storm. The waves wash them ashore to a remote island, which they soon discover is populated by an indigenous tribe. There, the group finds themselves caught in what they assume is a “welcoming” pagan rite. Fearing that any misstep could put them in greater danger, they play along with the tribe, insisting they need help from outside. Soon, it becomes clear that the ritual is not a welcoming rite, but a sacrifice.  The survivors slowly discover that the tribe worships a “God of the Sea” called “Bakunawa.” Like many unsuspecting visitors to the island, they are offered as sacrifices to become “children of the God,” living hosts for the horrendous spawns of this so-called deity. A fierce struggle for survival ensues, as escaping the island becomes their only option. As they navigate through the dense environment, they learn, to their horror, that “Bakunawa” is not just a myth but a very real entity lurking beneath Bakunawa.

Logline:

When an uprooted holiday cabin inheritor fights bankruptcy to preserve the family business with the help of her property manager, she finds herself targeted by mysterious forces whose dark secrets she must face in order to survive.

Synopsis:

Uprooted, bankruptcy-threatened hotel inheritor Jane must salvage her late parents’ promising, yet abandoned cabin with the help of alluring property manager Will. Battling her audit deadline and seasonal fog that will shut down the region, she learns this weather heightens the villagers’ fear of a women-devouring forest demon, believed responsible for unexplained disappearances. Rushing renovations, Jane experiences a sense of belonging, as she and Will develop a mutual attraction. Homemaking, she discovers clues about her parents' piety, alongside uncanny forest vibes and ghostly visions. When an eery attack leaves them stranded and trapped by the fog, they submit to their feelings, entering a relationship. Will urges that they should safely wait out the fog. Seeking the truth, Jane investigates cabin records and her family history, until increasingly tormenting hauntings stop her. Jane doubts her sanity as Will accuses her of ruining their relationship. But when the attacker returns and Will kills him, Jane comes to unravel that her father domestically abused her mother, justified by old doctrine rituals he found at the cabin, created by a colonial men’s cult that invented the demon to control women. Will, looking for a partner to save him from himself, seeks absolution through the same doctrine, after murdering and discarding rural girlfriends. Creating a ‘haunted house’, he manipulated Jane to hide his ex’s body. When Jane rejects Will he strangles her, but she kills him and leaves, uniting with local women.

Hysteria

PRODUCTION COMPANY
ABS-CBN Studios

PHILIPPINES

Logline:
A self-righteous priest investigates a series of demonic possessions plaguing a small town trapped in its own contradictory beliefs. But as the mystery unfolds, a dark past haunts the troubled cleric, revealing an explosive secret that makes him realize he is causing this hysteria all along.

Synopsis:
It is Palm Sunday, and the newly ordained pious but self-righteous priest, FATHER THOMAS, blesses the sea of palm leaves swaying inside his parish church. Until one falls to the ground. And then another thud. And another, and another. His parishioners are dropping like dead flies. One hundred three individuals hyperventilate in unison. The sleepy town of Matwang Kuweba is gripped by hysteria. Fr. Thomas investigates the mystery with the guidance of his foul-mouthed mentor, BISHOP ELMER. However, in Fr. Thomas’s quest to find answers, the townspeople’s contradicting beliefs complicate things even more. The eager town’s municipal health officer, DR. SOPHIA, insists this is mercury poisoning. At the same time, the enigmatic faith healer, APUNG PURING, warns them about the angry spirits of the cave unleashing their wrath. Fr. Thomas focuses his investigation on the teen mom, CLARITA, who keeps telling him a man at the top of belfry is about to kill them. Fr. Thomas shudders. A man committed suicide in the church’s belfry ten years ago, and the townspeople believed he was sacrificed to appease the angry spirits of the old cave then. This is now the same man possessing Clarita. Fr. Thomas is bothered. The teen girl’s demonic voice oddly sounds familiar. The same demonic voice has haunted him since he arrived in the village.  An intonation tied to a painful memory that the priest is trying to forget and escape from. Then, the realization hits Fr. Thomas – he is causing this tragedy all along. Guilt-stricken, Fr. Thomas turns his suspicions to his parishioners until the satanic voice turns into a menacing and taunting ghost, blaming him for the hysteria and pushing him to confess his mortal "sin.” The disturbing ghost is RYAN, expelled from the seminary because of Fr. Thomas’s betrayal, pushing him to commit suicide. This guilt plagues the embattled priest and forces him to face his demons. Fr. Thomas fiercely guards this most profound secret – he desires men – but this consumes his heart and soul, spiraling him into self-doubt and plunging the town into more chaos.

INDONESIA

Logline:
Ami, a viral-seeking YouTuber who doesn’t believe in ghosts, makes videos to explain that her sleep-paralysis demon is just a hallucination. Little does she knows the demon is there to torture her.

Synopsis:
Ami (28) is a YouTuber who wants to prove the logical explanation behind a ghost sighting. She ventures into a haunted forest, filming a vlog to prove that the supernatural is nothing more than superstition. Her boldness catches the attention of a paranormal podcast, where she’s invited for an interview. However, the hosts accuse her of being irreligious—a dangerous claim in Indonesia, where such accusations carry heavy social stigma. They also predict her channel will never go viral. Ami is furious and more determined than ever to prove them wrong.  Soon after, Ami experiences sleep paralysis—a terrifying phenomenon where one is conscious but unable to move, often accompanied by hallucinations. Determined to debunk the notion that demons are involved, she sets up a camera to film herself sleeping. However, when she reviews the footage, she’s horrified to see footsteps moving away from her bed. This unexplained occurrence shakes her deeply, and she finds solace only in watching old videos of her deceased mother.  As her sleep paralysis worsens, Ami begins to have seizures.

Her younger brother, Riki, who believes in the supernatural, urges her to visit a shaman. The shaman reveals that Ami is being tormented by a demon named Siampa. It turns out that during her vlog in the haunted forest, Ami had urinated on a tree that was Siampa’s dwelling place, enraging the demon. Siampa aims to possess Ami. The shaman warns that once possessed, Ami will become ruthless and could only be brought back to her senses by hearing the voice of someone she loves.  To banish Siampa, the shaman performs a ritual in the forest where Ami had desecrated the tree. In a tense ceremony, Siampa is transferred into a black chicken, which the shaman then slaughters, seemingly ending the threat. Ami returns home relieved, finally able to sleep peacefully—until the next night, when the sleep paralysis returns. Alarmed, Ami and Riki revisit the forest, only to find the supposedly slaughtered chicken alive. The ritual failed because Ami’s skepticism in the supernatural. Suddenly, Siampa takes control, and Ami nearly attacks Riki with a sharp branch before regaining her senses.

Ami’s situation deteriorates as her sleep paralysis becomes more frequent and severe. Riki promises to protect her, but Ami knows the danger she poses, especially if Siampa takes full control. Her frustration grows, exacerbated by her inability to fulfill her dream of going viral, while her absence from the vlogging scene invites mockery from her haters.  In a desperate bid to prove herself, Ami streams herself sleeping live on YouTube. As her haters watch, the shadowy figure of Siampa finally appears and enters her body. Ami awakens with a sinister smile, no longer herself. However, her mother’s voice, playing from a pre-recorded video, breaks through Siampa’s hold momentarily. With a fleeting moment of clarity, Ami grabs a knife and slits her throat, killing both herself and Siampa. The live stream goes viral, viewed by over 2 million people, but at a tragic cost.
