Trending Asia, Winning Kids

‘Inclusion & Diversity’ is the name of the game for children’s content

By Marcus Goh

“Commissioners are emphasising that they are seeking shows that reflect their audience and create empathy for younger people from different backgrounds,” observed Trang Nguyen, Senior Researcher at K7 Media, at a session about trending children’s content from Asia. It’s moving toward normalising the topic of representation in the kids’ space.

Reflecting this move towards diversity and inclusion, EBS’ Ding Dong Dang Kindergarten in South Korea saw a revamp this year to include characters with multicultural backgrounds and disabilities. NHK’s Deko-boko Pon! in Japan features children with special education needs and disabilities learning life skills through a creative approach.

Established IPs also continue to grow, with Pinkfong’s Baby Shark Dance continuing to be the most viewed YouTube content. Other such titles include Night at the Art Museum by The Pinkfong Company and Line Friends in South Korea, Little Singham by Rohit Shetty Picturez and Reliance Entertainment in India, and Ejen Ali by Media Prima in Malaysia.

Other trends include the rise of shows that depict ordinary characters and their everyday lives, those with a nature theme, unscripted formats, and live-action fantasy comedies.
