Rylan Friday (Saulteaux Ojibway/Plains Cree/Métis) is an award-winning multidisciplinary director, curator, writer, and producer from Cote First Nation, Saskatchewan. Their work centers LGBTQ2+ and Indigenous representation, bringing forward honest, culturally grounded stories shaped by personal experience.
In 2019, Rylan produced Trevor Mack’s feature film Portraits From a Fire, helping implement a peer-to-peer mentorship program for Indigenous youth involved in the production. Their contributions earned them the Kevin Tierney Emerging Producer Award at the CMPA Indie Screen Awards during Prime Time Ottawa 2022, as well as the Leo Award for Best Motion Picture.
Rylan began their storytelling career in radio broadcasting at 94.2 The Edge FM in Auckland, New Zealand, an experience that deepened their understanding of the power and responsibility of Indigenous perspectives in media. Influenced by art-house cinema, Rylan’s work blends surrealist visual language with grounded realism, prioritizing intimate, truthful performances.
Their short film Terror/Forming has screened at Fantastic Fest, LA Skins, Māoriland, imagineNATIVE, and additional festivals worldwide. The film won Best Short Horror Film at the 2023 London Independent Film Festival and Best BC Short at the Vancouver Horror Show.
Rylan recently completed the short films Musk. and The Sound of You Collapsing. Following the success of Terror/Forming, they are currently developing its feature-length expansion, Terror/Rising, which marks their debut as a feature film director.
