CJ ENM: Increased Investment In Southeast Asian Originals

Mickey Ong, Senior Vice President & General Manager of CJ ENM HK (SG Branch), recently reiterated that the company’s focus in the coming months will continue to be home-grown.

“Local language productions will be our focus, and we are looking to announce more SEA productions deals in near future,” said Mickey, who in 2020, was elevated to the role of general manager.

“These deals are for premium scripted series primarily made in Bahasa, Mandarin and Thai languages, using our Korean IPs (localisation), as well as locally discovered IPs.”

Based in Singapore, Mickey oversees the brand partnerships team as well as the company’s scripted series production business for Southeast Asia, including Hong Kong and Taiwan. “(In this new role), there’s a lot to learn and do in productions. But most importantly, is the need to continue to deliver good value to our customers and stay relevant,” Mickey noted.

According to Mickey, the company’s core belief is to continue to build strong brands and deliver quality content to entertain audiences. Korean contents remain top choice among Asian audiences, and company brands tvN and tvN Movies are trusted to deliver, whether on linear or VOD.

“We topped our linear channels’ ratings last year in Singapore and Malaysia and expanded our overseas reach with tvN Africa’s launch in Q1, 2021 (linear channel),” Mickey elaborated.

“Our SVOD services continue to grow through regional deals with iQIYI SEA, in addition to concluding multiple new deals with mobile operators in Taiwan, Thailand, and the Philippines in ‘Live’ K-Pop content, such as M Countdown Multi View, and KCON: TACT online version for their subscribers.”

An important development to note as well is CJ ENM HK’s commencement to invest more in original SEA productions, particularly in scripted series.

“We have a three-series deal jointly working with IMDA that will commence production in the second half of this year, along with a co-produced Taiwan series, Mom Don’t Do That, which is scheduled to premiere on a global streaming platform in the Summer,” Mickey revealed.
