    Co-productions are the flavour of the moment in US-Chinese film industry relations. There are major initiatives by China’s largest film companies to break into Hollywood and the English-language film market. At the same time Hollywood studios and US independents alike are looking to China as one of the last growth markets for theatrical audiences. They alas see China as a source of production finance. But the last months have delivered a succession of reality checks, not least of which has been a stern reminder from Chinese authorities that there needs to be more Chinese involvement in co-productions. The panel will discuss exactly where is this sector headed and ask who will be the players who can strike the right balance

    The liberalisation of the Chinese film industry has coincided with unprecedented revolutions in film technology – digital projection, digital film-making and online distribution. With little infrastructure burden to cling on to, Chinese film companies have been able to leap to the forefront of new technology usage, making Chinese firms Asia’s most active producers of 3-D and IMAX films. China has also developed Asia’s most energetic VOD market.

    This panel will ask why Chinese audiences are still enthralled by 3-D and IMAX;
    i) how Chinese film-makers are using the new kit
    iii) how VoD firms have the potential to finance the production sector and change distribution
    iv) how made for mobile and made for internet films may become a parallel film industry economy.

    Young affluent consumers in China are increasingly turning to their personal computers, instead of the communal TV sets, for video entertainment. Most importantly they are the target audience who are willing to pay for a good piece of content. China has more than 300 million online video users, with online video ad spends growing 60% to 80% annually. Having the right content is not enough, knowing how to distribute the piece of content on to the right platform to reach out to the right target audience is crucial.
