Stephen Harris Head of Development, The Workaholic Entertainment Group, USA
In ‘How to Get Funding’ Stephen analyzes an array of models for funding series and documentaries. He will begin by analyzing the Work-for-Hire model that dominates the US TV industry, particularly for the character-based, repeatable series that are so popular today. He describes the process whereby pitches are evaluated by development executives, focusing on the business factors that can shape their decisions. The role and expectations of Talent is one of the most important. He describes the prevailing deal terms, including the development and other costs that producers may recoup after their projects are green lit.
For documentaries and TV specials, he identifies various acquisition and co-production models, and identifies the key global players including HBO, PBS, BBC, Smithsonian, ARTE and others. He describes the range of financial contributions that may be considered by co-pro partners, and details acquisition fee benchmarks for a range of channels.
